The realization that merely human planning has no part in God's ever-present law of adjustment is a humbling and vital thought. This realization came to me most clearly while I was marooned in a hotel having neither electricity nor water during the flood in Florence, Italy, on November 4, 1966.

Our student group consisting of all Christian Scientists first experienced wonderful protection through reliance on God's law of adjustment when all thirty-three of us, with seventy-two bags, safely evacuated the first hotel in which we were staying. We moved on foot to a hotel on higher ground without any inharmony only one half hour before the streets filled with the ferocious water.

The knowledge of God's ever-presence that one becomes aware of through the study of Christian Science previously had been very dear to me, but I always had relied heavily on my own human outlining and that of others as well. During the flood, however, all members of our group, including our capable directors, experienced the same humility and turned wholeheartedly to God because the torrent of destructive water rushing through the streets of Florence made any human outlining impossible.
