The Structure of Friendship

One evening I watched my son build a skyscraper with his structure set. He placed the foundation together, taking care to assure that the pieces holding the building were securely in place. When I asked him why it was so important to spend so much time on the foundation, he told me he had learned from previous experience that the structure would collapse without a strongly constructed base.

Later I likened my son's careful construction to the building of a lasting friendship. I became aware that true friendship founded on an understanding of God as infinite Love, or Mind, and on the expression of His qualities is firmly established.

Christian Science teaches that God is the great architect and that His creation, including spiritual man, is the complete unfoldment of the divine plan. Knowing that Mind's idea, man, expresses perpetual harmony, one can replace destructive or debased thoughts with scientific truths, which heal discordant human problems. The demonstration of this spiritual fact changes the basis of love and affection from mortal beliefs, which include unlovely traits of disposition, to the expression of godliness. Mrs. Eddy says, "Kindred tastes, motives, and aspirations are necessary to the formation of a happy and permanent companionship." Science and Health, p. 60;
