I am grateful to have had many proofs of God's goodness and care. As a child I had a number of physical healings, and I experienced demonstrations of direction, supply, and protection during my educational years. As Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 258), "God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis." This had been proved over and over again.

Shortly after the start of the Second World War I volunteered for service in the Navy and was rejected because I did not pass the eye test. The examiner said the difficulty was one the could not be corrected by glasses or by treatment and that it was a technical defect. The alternative of limited duty was offered provided I secured a certificate from an eye specialist. I did obtain a certificate, but then my thought was awakened and I realized that I must either rely on the rules of optics or on Christian Science.

I took a radical stand for reliance on the healing power of Christian Science. The practitioner whom I had asked for treatment supported this decision. Within a week my eyes were reexamined, no defects were found, and arrangements were made for me to start military duty.
