In 1916 a very good acquaintance of mine sent a package of Christian Science literature to me, and in an accompanying letter the sender related his healing of tuberculosis through the help of Christian Science. From then on I availed myself of every opportunity to visit Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Reading Rooms and to attend Christian Science lectures. Now I had found a religion which would answer my questions and throw light on the hidden truths of the Bible.
The Bible has always been and is a precious book to me. As a sailor I kept the Bible with me on voyages from the time I started as a steerage boy until I stood as captain of a ship. However, the Bible had been lying on a shelf for eight years because of what I in my ignorance called contradictions.
In a Christian Science lecture which I heard in New York City, the lecturer said, as I remember, "Take your Bible down from the shelf, blow the dust off it, open it, read it, ponder it." I did as he said.
