As a young girl I longed to have a religion that had proof of its correctness. One summer evening over fifty years ago, before a beautiful sunset, while we were walking near my home over the hills in a western city, a friend several years my senior gave me a few of the fundamentals of Christian Science, telling me that Christian Science heals as Jesus healed and taught his disciples to heal. As a result of the clarity with which she explained these fundamentals, together with my receptivity, I went into my home after our walk and telephoned the choirmaster of the Protestant church in which I had planned to join the choir and told him that I would not be joining the choir; that I was going to be a Christian Scientist.
I started attending the Christian Science Sunday School. At the age of twenty I joined a branch church. Truth, to me, as I grew up, was vital, and I had a reverence for what, as I learned in Christian Science, is one of the seven synonyms for God. For this love of Truth, which was a leading light to me, I am everlastingly grateful. It was no doubt helpful in preparing my receptivity to Christian Science. At no time have I ever doubted the correctness of its teachings. Throughout the years I have constantly witnessed healings through its faithful application. Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them" (Matt. 7:20).
Some years ago I was suddenly seized with intense pain in my limbs. In the middle of the night, when the pain seemed more severe than I could bear, my husband telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, asking her if she would please give me treatment. She patiently worked for me for a month, and relief came. However, I was unable to stand on my feet for some time. Gradually I progressed from a wheelchair to a cane. In several months I was free, ever grateful for the understanding that I had of Christian Science and for the privilege of class instruction many years before.
