When a young girl, I was riding horseback on a barren hill one...

When a young girl, I was riding horseback on a barren hill one day with a cousin. We were caught in a sudden electrical storm. Lightning was flashing all around the horizon. Becoming fearful, I turned in the saddle to tell my cousin that we should get home as soon as possible. The last thing I then remembered was seeing the stones on the trail.

Next I became conscious of two thoughts, one being very persistent. It was, "You have been struck by lightning!" Immediately came the second thought, "You could not possibly be struck, since you are the image and likeness of God, Spirit, and matter cannot touch you." I then awoke and found myself alone on the ground and my horse grazing nearby.

I was unhurt physically except for a slight bruise on one foot. However, I could neither remember what had happened nor who I was. I knew that the horse was mine, and I led him to the nearest shelter, a Sioux camp at the base of the hill. An Indian met me halfway down; and when I asked what had happened, he said, "We saw lightning strike a horse and rider, and I was on my way up to find the body."
