Substance . . . evidence (Hebr. 11:1)
Thayer reminds us that hypostasis (substance) was used in the first century in several additional senses, including "real being, courage, resolution, assurance, confidence, firm trust"; while elegchos (evidence) may also be rendered "proof, conviction, demonstration." The New English Bible has, "Faith gives substance to our hopes, and makes us certain of realities we do not see."
