During the period that I was a graduate nurse in Germany, I...

During the period that I was a graduate nurse in Germany, I searched for a logical and satisfying understanding of God's will. One question troubled me in particular. I had been brought up in a Protestant faith, and I believed that God sent accidents, deformities, and diseases in order to teach and purify us. Why, then, did God send Christ Jesus to heal and rebuke these tribulations? Then a neighbor of mine introduced me to Christian Science.

Christian Science brought me the first light of understanding and filled my heart with joy. My neighbor loaned me Science and Health, and I read this book by Mrs. Eddy with great eagerness. A few years later I found myself ill with tuberculosis. Another friend, also a Christian Scientist, took me into her home since I was unable to take care of my four children. A medical doctor whom we had to call for legal reasons advised me to make immediate arrangements to enter a sanatorium, stating that I would not be able to return to my family for quite some time.

After three weeks of suffering I was completely exhausted. I was receiving no medical treatment; so I was able to have Christian Science treatment, and a practitioner visited me often. But one particular day I told her that I simply could not read any more, and therefore could not do my part to bring about a healing. I still can see her now. She smiled kindly and said: "You don't need to work so hard or make such an effort. God sees your perfect selfhood, which He has created, well and joyous and the reflection of Him who is your Life."
