Joseph ... being ... not willing to make her a publick example (Matt. 1:19)
The Greek word here rendered "to make a publick example" can mean simply "to set forth as an example," but was often used in a bad sense to mean "to hold up to infamy; to expose to public disgrace." Weymouth suggests, "Joseph ... unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal."
Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people (Matt. 1:21)
