When my husband and I knew we were going to have a child, we wanted to work out the entire experience quietly with God. We called on a Christian Science practitioner to help us to listen for and be obedient to God's direction.

A few weeks before the child was to arrive, the doctor told me that I had a serious physical disorder that was endangering my life and that I probably would not survive the birth. He further stated that the child would be adversely affected by this condition. My husband and I quickly reversed what appeared to be a frightening prediction of possible disaster by the spiritual fact that man is not cursed but blessed, because "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31).

The doctor urged me to take some medicine as my only hope and said that I must have complete rest and never be left alone. I explained to him that I was relying completely on Christian Science treatment and would not need the medicine.
