When I was ten years old, Mother was told that my tonsils and adenoids would have to be removed. Being adamantly opposed to surgery and having heard about Christian Science through a distant relative, Mother sought the aid of a practitioner. Through his prayerful work the condition was healed, and I attended a Christian Science Sunday School a few times; but we did not continue with Science.

Many years later I was stricken with tuberculosis and was considered to be critically ill. I was put in a sanatorium. The first few weeks I was too ill and too despondent to care what happened to me. Being fully aware that for years I had been blinded by materialism and sensualism, I was now convinced this illness was God's punishment for my having practically ignored Him (except when I wanted something greatly enough) through most of the intervening years since my childhood.

Though I am not certain just what sparked the idea that perhaps all was not lost, hope grew when I came across this quotation from the Bible (Ezek. 18:32): "I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." During the next few months the Bible became a great comfort. However, there were many questions for which I could not find satisfactory answers.
