My parents enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School at an early age, and so I have much for which to be grateful. But I have always been most impressed in Science with the feeling one gains of real at-one-ment with God, the divine presence, a feeling that is ever available to us if we will but reach out for it. Mrs. Eddy tells us in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 18), "Atonement is the exemplification of man's unity with God, whereby man reflects divine Truth, Life, and Love."

One of the first results of my contact with and study of Science was the understanding that a humble consciousness of this ever-present divine Mind, God, serves as an effective shield. I have experienced protection from so-called childhood diseases; safety during extremely hazardous winter driving conditions; calm and comfort while serving aboard ship under fire and in violent storms.

And I recall with joy how truths learned in Science eliminated all fearfulness while I was quarterbacking two undefeated high school football teams when the other players were generally much bigger than I. Before I applied Christian Science, I had been hesitant about participating in the sport at all.
