Signs of the Times
Prof. Richard K. Morton, Chaplain
Jacksonville University, Florida
Contributing Editor, The Churchman
St. Petersburg, Florida
Two views of the church are widely expressed among people of various classes today: "The church will gradually wither away in our tunes"; "The church will survive into the future, but will be basically different in structure and function from the institution that came forth out of the first century." . . . Those who hold to some form of the second view see the church as evolving into a social service institution. . . .
Both of these views despair of the church in its historic role, and both are unaware of many important developments in modern life.
