For a period of thirteen years, I had suffered from hemorrhaging and had just undergone a second operation, which had not been successful. Since no hope had been offered, I asked my wife to get me released from the hospital, as I wanted to be home with my loved ones.

A dear friend who was not a Christian Scientist, but who had witnessed a healing of epilepsy through Science, called on me at home; and seeing my condition he said, "What you need is Christian Science!" He obtained some of the periodicals for us, and soon afterward we tuned in to a radio broadcast of a service from Church Church of Christ, Scientist, in our city. From this we learned of the Reading Rooms. My wife made a visit to the nearest one and purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. We began reading with a dictionary in one hand and the textbook in the other. We could not grasp much of what we were reading at first, but we knew we had found what we needed.

We were invited to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and I agreed to go; but I asked my friend not to be embarrassed if I had to leave, as I had not been able to sit comfortably for any period of time and had not lain in a bed for over two months. I sat through the entire service and left with such a feeling of hope! I had been told I could not return to work until the doctors called me in for another examination, so I had much time to study. The way opened up for us to have a lovely vacation, which gave me the needed quiet for continued study away from the cares of the home. One day I suddenly said, "I am going back to the company doctor to ask him for permission to return to work."
