I shall never cease to be grateful for the provision made by Mrs. Eddy...

I shall never cease to be grateful for the provision made by Mrs. Eddy in the Manual of The Mother Church for children to join The Mother Church at twelve years of age. I enthusiastically joined as soon as I was twelve and was a firm believer in the teachings of Christian Science. I was beautifully protected from trials through the application of Science by my mother and practitioners, but when I married and had to apply and prove it for myself, I found belief wasn't enough; I lacked faith and understanding. The religion seemed difficult and hard to apply, and I thought it would take more of my time to learn it than I was willing to give.

Yet in my heart I knew Christian Science was the only way to true health and happiness, and I was unwilling to give it up completely. I feel with certainty that my being a member of The Mother Church helped me to cling to what little I knew at that time.

Without a working knowledge of Science through the years I was compromising with materialism and gradually slipping backward. I did have a genuine desire to live what I knew to be true but seemed unable to break the mesmerism of lethargy and inability. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds."
