During a stay in an Asian country I was suddenly struck with a very serious and painful infection in my face. I was told that the infection occurs frequently in that country and that I should report immediately to a doctor for treatment.

I was living at that time in a flat for foreign students, where nobody knew anything about Christian Science. At first I did not pay much attention to the problem. But soon it became more and more acute, so that I was ashamed to go on the street. Then my fellow students refused to eat with me at the same table, and much fear and superstition were expressed around me.

I secluded myself in my room and did not come out for two days. I read from the Bible and from Mary Baker Eddy's writings, but the physical evidence remained the same. I tried then to contact the one local practitioner, but she happened to be out of town for some weeks. A phone call to a practitioner in another country was not approved by the foundation which was sponsoring me; it would only help me to obtain medical treatment. I was very desperate and full of fear; I even became very homesick.
