Soon after a dear one passed...
Soon after a dear one passed away, I bought a new copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and was showing it to a Christian Science practitioner. She took the book in her hands and said, "This is a new book." Then opening it she continued in substance: "A new chapter and a new life for you. There are two courses open for you. You can continue to be lonely and melancholy. You can be sorry for yourself because your wife is no longer on this plane of thought, or instead of following this kind of thinking, you can open up your consciousness, as you open up this new book, to a brand new life—to a life of joy and happiness through your understanding of Christian Science. There is just no limit to the progress that you can make in this glorious truth." As time went on, I came to realize that what this practitioner said was true.
I discovered that it helped a lot to be doing things to help people and sometimes to do the very things for them that I knew my wife would have done. I became quite active in church work and took much satisfaction in this service. For a long time it was very difficult for me to sit alone in my home and study. I wanted to be somewhere else and with friends. At last I saw that my friends were not really away from me but that their thoughts were with me and to see them in person was not a necessity. And so I settled down contentedly to the great companionship of the Bible, my Christian Science books, and our authorized literature.
More recently I was concerned with a small growth appearing on my forehead near the hairline. This had been in evidence for some time and was becoming very annoying. It grew larger and was quite noticeable. Having had class instruction, during which I received specific directions about how the healing work should be done, I decided that this was an opportunity to put into practice the truths that I had learned.
