Our Reading Rooms

A Place Prepared

A librarian, in preparing a report on Reading Room activity, writes in part:

"Your Reading Room opens its door to the people of the community, extending an invitation to receptive hearts. Its sacred trust is to preserve the Christ Science in all its purity, offering to the public the authorized publications of the Christian Science movement.

"In obedience to the 'Rule of Conduct' stipulated in Article XXV, Section 7, in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, the Reading Room's healing mission is felt in the purified atmosphere conducive to quiet study and inspired thought. The power of this By-Law has acted as a protection for those serving in the Reading Room and for all who enter therein. It alerts the librarian to reject as unreal any objectionable pictures—evidence of deformity or disease—which would present themselves. It also sets a standard for behavior and conversation.
