The waste howling wilderness (Deut. 32:10)

The Hebrew word yelel does indeed have the literal sense of "howling,'" with special reference to the howling of beasts, and well suggests the eerie environment of a wild tract of country, largely inhabited by wild animals. The Revised Standard Version suggests, "the howling waste of the wilderness."
