I became acquainted with Christian Science...
I became acquainted with Christian Science more than thirty years ago. A dear friend recommended it to me for our four-month-old son, who had been born prematurely and had developed a severe stomach and bowel disorder which medication had not cured. For two weeks the condition had continually become worse, and he had not retained food for several days.
A practitioner was asked to give the baby treatment, and all medication was stopped. Two days went by with no apparent change one way or the other. On the third day the practitioner asked me what I was feeding the child, and I mentioned certain extra precautions I was taking because of his condition, such as boiling the milk and so on. She asked me to feed him exactly as I had before the difficulty appeared. This I did, and his recovery was almost instantaneous.
It was then that I obtained a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Later, in this textbook I read on page 388 this statement which was the basis for the healing: "Admit the common hypothesis that food is the nutriment of life, and there follows the necessity for another admission in the opposite direction. —that food has power to destroy Life. God, through a deficiency or an excess, a quality or a quantity."
