Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 228): "The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses. Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God." If we follow the dictates of the material senses, mortal mind, and seek pleasure and satisfaction through the senses, we are indeed enslaved. For many years I labored under the false impression that there were pleasure and satisfaction in the smoking habit. When a member of my family was advised to give up the use of tobacco because of a serious health condition, I realized that the temptation to smoke induced in her by my indulgence in the habit should be reduced or eliminated. In order to do this, I was accustomed to do my smoking in a small basement hobby shop.

About this time I became interested in Christian Science and wished to give up the habit altogether. One day as I was working in the shop I started to smoke but instead gave the problem some prayerful thought. The Bible account of Paul's arrest and subsequent release with his statement, "But I was free born'' (Acts 22: 28), awakened me to the fact that I need no longer be a slave to the tobacco habit. With that realization I was instantaneously and permanently healed of the habit. For this healing which took place some sixteen years ago, I am truly grateful.

I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for positions held in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, including those of First Reader, membership in various committees and on the executive board, for Sunday School work, and for class instruction.—Howard Franklin Evans, Stockton, California.
