Many churches in the heart of America's great cities have betrayed their mission. ... The church, once the focus and hub of community life, has, in effect, turned its back on the needs of the changing urban population and joined the flight to the suburbs.

The church, whatever its denominational label, was called into being as an agency of reconciliation. Its task is to reconcile man to his God and to his fellow man. It should be one place in the community where any human being, whatever his age or condition, can expect to find a friendly welcome and a helping hand. Tragically, in the "inner city" this is no longer the case. Over the years, whole congregations have moved out, leaving behind old buildings and new problems. With inadequate financial support and reduced staffs, many churches have been unable—and some unwilling—to minister helpfully to the new residents who have crowded in. Often, the people are not made welcome. ...
