Christ Himself warned that He had not come to tiring "peace, but a sword"—just because Me foresaw with what bitterness His teaching would be sawn asunder. ... If we could only analyze our strong antipathies in religious matters we should discover that they are due to the depth of our need —all of us—for religious reality. It is just because we are fundamentally religious...that religious "feelings" wax so strong and often so bitter. In touching religion we are touching the very deeps of man's nature, even if lie tries to deny this.

Denominationalism came to be the outstanding characteristic of Christendom. Men and women in each denominational group tended to tuck themselves snugly into their particular corner.... All this was a tragic necessity in its day due to the climate of contemporary mental and spiritual limitedness of development.
