Activities for the Armed Services

Christian Science Ministers for the Armed Services assist Christian Scientists at United States academies. The Ministers at the Military Academy, West Point, and at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, conduct Sunday services. The midshipmen at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, may attend the Christian Science Church or the Sunday School. All three of these academies have Christian Science organizations, which hold regular midweek meetings.

At West Point a cadet asked the Minister to help him heal excessively swollen lymph nodules in his armpits, which were very painful and were interfering with his training. Seeing the cadet primarily concerned with the physical manifestation, the Minister instructed him to treat the underlying mental condition. By obediently following this instruction and working to eliminate undesirable elements from his thinking, the cadet was quickly healed and had no recurrence of the difficulty.

A midshipman who had been nominated for battalion commander feared that he would not receive the appointment because of his poor academic record. In all other respects he was outstanding. After hearing the midshipman's story, the Minister at Annapolis said, "Do everything now." These words awakened the midshipman to recognize that he had fallen into a bad habit of putting things off; so he determined to be vigilant, to be dependent on divine Mind for guidance, and to make intelligent use of his time. With the support of the Minister, the midshipman soon improved his grades, and in due course was appointed a battalion commander.
