Over thirty years ago in my middle twenties I started to read the textbook by Mrs. Eddy, not because I thought that it would help me physically, though I was in dire need of healing, but to prove to a friend of mine how foolish she was to believe in what I thought then were the book's ridiculous and fantastic teachings. But in spite of my jeers and ridicule, together with my lack of faith, I was healed of heavy drinking, heart trouble, insomnia, and the use of profanity just by my first day's reading of the textbook. What a transformation from a reading of a book!
That first day I could not put the book down. I read on and on into the night: and instead of experiencing almost constant pain, I was scarcely conscious of a body, I was "absent from the body, and...present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8). And that night on retiring I dropped off into the first sound, natural sleep I had had in months.
I had tried to give up the drinking without success, and the heart condition was such that the doctor had said, "Unless you quit the drinking, you won't last long." To be released from the hell of insomnia would seem to be enough; but, better still, at long last I had found a satisfactory answer to my question about God. I had found that God is always Love, immutable Principle.
