For many years before I heard of Christian Science I was very ill with stomach trouble. The doctor I visited said he would be treating me for a long time. He put me on a strict diet, but I got no better.

From earliest childhood I had loved and studied the Bible and had often gained much comfort from it. I pondered the healings of Jesus and wondered why they were not repeated today. But when the stomach trouble and the grief at the loss of my baby seemed more than I could bear, I was without hope. Then these words came very distinctly to my thought: "Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord" (Ex. 14: 13). I knew that this was a message straight from God and that He would lead me in some wonderful way. Shortly afterward I was let! In a house where a Christian woman, knowing my plight, talked to me about God and spoke of Christian Science healing. The words "Christian" and "healing" appealed to me very much.

I was advised to go to a Christian Science Reading Room to find the name and address of a practitioner. The next day I took a train journey of twenty miles to the nearest town to find a Reading Room. There I was received by the attendant with much kindness, and when I said I did not know anything about Science, she told me, "It is just this: God is Love and does not allow His children to suffer."
