Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Glendale, California (Third Church).

Sunday, February 7, will mark a milestone in the history of Third Church of Christ, Scientist, Glendale, when they will dedicate their structure at 2406 Honolulu Avenue. All financial encumbrances against it have been erased.

On May 17, 1954, a group of professional and business people met [after closing hours] in the Reading Room of first Church of Christ, Scientist, La Canada, ... to organize a Christian Science Society to serve the people of the Crescenta alley area. On Feb. 3, 1955, the group was recognized as a society by The Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts.

A committee had been active in seeking a location for the church and had found that the only building available was a new structure ... at 2406 Honolulu Avenue. A lease was signed and the first service was held in June, 1954. The furnishing and equipping of the new building for church services and a Reading Room proved to be a great joy. The society received recognition on Dec. 8, 1955, as Third Church of Christ. Scientist, Glendale.

At a meeting of the members on July 11, 1957, it was decided to purchase the building. . . . Since then much work has been done to improve the church property, by installing opera-type scats, purchasing new furniture for the Reading Room, laying carpeting, and purchasing and installing a new Conn organ.—The Montrose Ledger (February 4, 1965).

Los Angeles, California (Thirty-first Church).

Thirty-first Church of Christ, Scientist, dedicated its church edifice, 3525 Glenhurst Avenue, in two services last Sunday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. A Christian Science church is dedicated only when it is free from debt. The dedication service is evidence of that freedom.

The origin of this church dates prior to 1921 when there were no paved streets or sidewalks in the area. It was then that a small group of Christian Scientists began to hold services in a private residence in the Atwater community.

A few years later a small frame building on Riverside Drive was leased, and in December, 1926, the group was recognized as a Christian Science Society by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. A year later the society purchased the property on Riverside Drive, and in January, 1930, it received recognition as Thirty-first Church of Christ, Scientist, Los Angeles.

Desiring a more convenient and prominent location both for the church building and the Reading Room, the membership in 1948 decided to sell the property and use as a temporary meeting place the Atwater Masonic Temple on Glendale Boulevard. Four years later a move was made into a nearby store which was converted into an attractive auditorium and which served as a church home for eight years, until the present structure was built. Meanwhile, search was made to find a suitable permanent location. In 1954, a vacant lot, site of the church to be dedicated, was purchased and construction of the new edifice began in the fall of 1959. The first services were held in the new building on January 3, I960.—Griffith Park News (January 9, 1964).

Midland, Western Australia (Society).

Though services have been held by Christian Science Society, Midland, in its church building on the corner of Keane-street and The Crescent since February, 1962, dedication services have only just been held.

Sunday meetings of Christian Scientists first began in the Midland area in 1930 when a few local people gathered to [hold services] in a private home and later in the Masonic Hall.

The group became recognised as a Christian Science Society seven years later, thus becoming a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

The building dedicated last weekend includes a Reading Room. The society plans to extend the building to bring the Sunday School under the same roof at a later date.

There is a Christian Science Society in Fremantle, and a group is meeting at Manjimup in addition to the Midland socicty and the church in St. George's-place, Perth.—The West Australian (July 11, 1964).
