Praying "for all that are in authority"

We are apt to think of the present as presenting unprecedented problems for mankind to solve—problems concerning freedom from exploitation, problems of self-government, problems posed by irreconcilable political and religious ideologies. But a survey of the history of mankind shows clearly that today's problems are age-old ones but on an ever-expanding scale.

However, despite appearances, solutions may be nearer than ever before. Alert Christian Scientists are glimpsing the present turmoil as a vast moral chemicalization in which a higher concept of Truth is uncovering error, preparatory to destroying it. In their prayers and work, they are seeking for a better world by obeying the divine commands urged by Christ Jesus—to love God, good, above all and one's neighbor as oneself. These commands are based on a recognition of God as Spirit and of the real man as His inseparable, spiritual expression, His image and likeness.

Mrs. Eddy, the revelator of the Christ, Truth, to this age, says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 306), "Divinity alone solves the problem of humanity, and that in God's own time." The redemption of mankind is attainable now in proportion as they sincerely and understandingly put the divine precepts to work, first in their individual lives and then in universal collective action.
