Church and "a higher humanity"

Commenting upon the creation by God of "every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew" (Gen. 2:5), Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 520), "Here is the emphatic declaration that God creates all through Mind, not through matter,—that the plant grows, not because of seed or soil, but because growth is the eternal mandate of Mind."

Applied to a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, this authoritative command of Mind is assurance that no individual member need experience any lack of spiritual growth, any period of moral and spiritual stagnation. With this fact thoroughly established in thought, no Christian Scientist will stand idly by when evidence of inaction or reversal would claim to mock his efforts.

One of the things we early learn in Science is that there is no standing still, no pausing to indulge a prolonged sense of gratification for progress already made. The command to keep pace with the spiritual demands constantly being made upon us must be responded to.
