A New Teacher's Demonstration

When a church member was asked to teach a class of nine eleven-year-olds in a Christian Science Sunday School, she was tempted to refuse. This was one church duty that she felt unable to fill. But the suggestion of inadequacy and the thought that her free time would be limited faded when she remembered the value of her own Sunday School experience. She recalled Mrs. Eddy's words, "Sacrifice self to bless one another, even as God has blessed you" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 155). The member also feared that she would not be able to express herself properly so that the pupils would understand. But God's promise to Moses came to thought, "Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say" (Ex. 4:12).

The class had had substitute teachers for the past two months. The lack of continuity in the teaching and of normalcy in the class was apparent in an undisciplined and inattentive attitude. It became necessary to turn thought away from what appeared to be a group of naughty children and see them in their real nature as perfect, under the discipline and control of divine Principle, their Father-Mother God. The teacher considered Mrs. Eddy's words, "The divine children are born of law and order, and Truth knows only such" (Unity of Good, p. 23). Gradually behavior improved.

As Christian Science was made interesting and practical for the pupils, they became interested. At one point the teacher illustrated the need for attention by describing the lifeboat drill on board a liner at sea. She told of the importance of listening to the captain's instructions so that one would know just what to do should an emergency arise. The pupils realized the urgency of listening to the teaching so that they would be equipped to meet any problems in their own lives.
