Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes...

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health p. 410): "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love." And she also writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany (p. 290), "Divine Love is never so near as when all earthly joys seem most afar." About nine years ago I had the opportunity to experience the significance and truth of these statements.

One Sunday evening upon returning home after serving as First Reader in a branch church, I became ill with what later developed into a severe case of pneumonia. My wife read to me from the Bible and from Science and Health, and we worked as we are taught in Christian Science to realize the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil and disease. A Christian Science practitioner was also helping through prayer to eliminate the fear from our thought in order to heal the condition.

Although there was some improvement during the week, at midnight Saturday it seemed humanly impossible that I could be at my post on Sunday morning. The suggestion was presented several times that I should call upon another to serve for me as I had done for the Wednesday testimony meeting. However, we held firmly to the thought that since it was right for me to be at my post, my efforts to be there would be supported by God, divine Principle.
