The Bible is the churches' experience, its empowering spirit. The recent [Bible] survey, Observations From USA Churches, puts it well: "The Church did not create the Word of God; but was called into being by the Word of God, and recognized it when confronted with it. ..." If this Book, by the Spirit of God, creates the dynamism which makes "dead bones live again," such a survey can be a blessing.

The 232 churches of 18 Protestant denominations that responded to at least one set of questions of the Study on the Use of the Bible were not at variance in their attitude to the Bible nor in their use of the Bible in the churches, as much as denominational differences sometimes indicate.
