Never Alone

[Of Special Interest to Young Men and Women]

Sociology teaches that man is naturally gregarious and that this is the reason many people dread being alone or left out of the group. Modern advertising plays upon this human tendency and attempts to sell almost everything from hair tonic to dancing lessons on the basis that it will assure one's being accepted by the group. "Togetherness" is set as the desirable goal for all.

The Christian Scientist's goal is to demonstrate that God is All and that God and man are inseparable. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea" (p. 476). An idea cannot be separated from its Principle; hence man is always together with God and with all His infinite ideas. In this unity there can be no separation, no lack.

In the allegory of Adam and Eve we find the first record of mortal mind's suggestion that man is not complete, that he lacks companionship. Thus Eve is made out of Adam's rib to supply this lack. When he yields to the temptation to eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree and so to supply his lack of knowledge of good and of evil, Adam is made an outcast from the Garden of Eden and forced to till the soil in sorrow.
