Teddy Takes His Stand
[Of Special Interest to Children]
One day Teddy and his little friend Susan were playing with a neighbor's dog. The neighbor had brought each of the children a lollipop, and their afternoon was filled with much joy. However, Teddy dropped his lollipop, and both he and the playful dog went for it at the same time. Teddy retrieved the candy, but the dog did not wish to give in so easily. In the tussle the dog bit Teddy's lip.
Susan's mother and the neighbor expressed much fear, and seeing the extent of the wound, they exclaimed, "Let's take him to the hospital."
Immediately Teddy stopped crying and stated quite firmly, "I'm a Christian Scientist."
This simple statement quieted the fears of those present; and it was at this point that the healing started taking place. Teddy's mother was not at home; but a relative was called, and she in turn called a Christian Science practitioner.
When Teddy's mother did return home one hour later, she found a happy, playful boy. Not once did he complain of pain or discomfort from the incident. The truths he had been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School and at home had given him a source of assuredness upon which he could draw. He knew that God loved him and that God was ever present, taking care of his every need. And he remembered that Jesus had healed people through God's power alone.
Knowing this, Teddy was sure he needed only God. He was familiar with this verse in the Bible (Gen. 1:27): "God created man in his own image." He knew that since he was in reality God's image, nothing could be true of him that was not true of God.
As a Christian Scientist, Teddy did not accept beliefs about accidents, for Mrs. Eddy says on page 424 of Science and Health, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection." The stand that Teddy took was an inspiration to the practitioner.
Within two weeks the healing was complete.
