A College Student Writes

Scientific Followers of Christ

Many times during our college experience, the question is put to us, For what exactly should we be striving? Our answers do not necessarily have to be startling. Is it social success, higher monetary gains, prestige? No. This is not the answer. As students of Christian Science, our first and foremost desire should be to be better followers of Christ.

We may ask ourselves, How can I follow the Christ, Truth? Christ Jesus himself answers this question for us, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." As we strive to express God, the one Mind, the one Spirit, we are seeking righteousness, or right thinking.

As college students, we must be acutely aware of our duties and responsibilities as followers of Christ. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 496 of Science and Health, "Ask yourself: Am I living the life that approaches the supreme good?" Are we constantly turning our thought Godward and seeing only purity, health, and holiness in our fellowmen, or are we seeing them as physical, mortal beings?
