Correct Identification

In Christian Science we learn that growing up is not a physical process. It is not a passing from here to there in stages of growth but is the unfolding of ever-expanding levels of thought from which standpoints we gain clearer, higher views of our true selfhood. Growing up involves the daily recognition of man's spiritual identity as the idea of perfect Mind, God. It is the progressively joyous identification of ourselves as spiritual and perfect ideas rather than as mortals submissive to claims of the physical senses, experiencing changes in bodily structure and functions which would seem to impose ills of the flesh or inharmonies of temperament.

Correct daily identification of oneself is satisfying work. It is based on the authority of the Bible. The first chapter of Genesis informs us that man is created by God, spiritually whole and complete in His image and likeness, and that he is blessed by God with dominion over all. This identification is the only true one.

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 294), "Man's genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is good and true." And she says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 129), "One's first lesson is to learn one's self." As the student is obedient to this directive, he correctly identifies himself only with "what is good and true." Recognizing his "genuine selfhood" as spiritual, he realizes that no material record is part of his true identity.
