Healing Bodily Ailments
When something is wrong with the body, we can treat the condition in Christian Science by applying spiritual truth. Healing results, since the body is a false mental concept which can be improved upon through Mind.
Mind is God, not the personal possession of a mortal. Mind is infinite, universal Truth. From Mind come only right ideas. Being All, Mind excludes false beliefs, and one who understands this can see that man is idea, and he can prove that disease is an error of belief. To apply truth to the particular claim presented by mortal belief is to destroy the claim.
Formulas are not allowed in Christian Science treatment because they overlook the mental nature of the disease to be healed. To say that every case of stomach trouble, for example, must be treated in the same way is to admit material error. It is using a formula. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 475), "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." It is inconsistent for one to begin with matter to analyze a case and then expect to heal on the basis of man's spirituality. But in treating a patient, one needs to discern and dispose of the patient's individual beliefs concerning a distressed bodily organ.
