RADIO PROGRAM No. 138 - Thanksgiving in Action

INTERVIEWER: Sometimes I wonder if gratitude has gone out of date. Some people feel they have worked hard for all they have, and that they don't owe gratitude to anybody. Others feel they have nothing to be thankful for. while some individuals at this season of the year think of gratitude mostly in terms of a big dinner or a football game. But surely there's something more to gratitude than that! As a Christian Scientist, what do you think about this?

SPEAKER: I agree with you. There is much more to gratitude than just an expression of thanks for material things. We need to ask ourselves, "To whom do we owe gratitude, and for what?"

One day while viewing a sunrise over a beautiful lake in the mountains a man said: "Look at that! It makes you feel grateful just to be alive." His friend, who did not believe in God, said, "Grateful to whom?" But as his friend began to think about his question and ponder its meaning, he realized that it didn't make sense to give thanks without expressing them to someone. He found himself reasoning that life was a free and unsolicited gilt; in which case, he concluded, there must be a giver, a universal giver. He realized that God is the giver of all good and that he should express his gratitude to Him.
