RADIO PROGRAM No. 130 - What Happens When You Pray?

INTERVIEWER: Prayer is a very individual matter, I know. But the question often arises whether there is a law involved in prayer. This brings to mind a book entitled "A Consciousness of God," in which the author, Dr. Albert Emmanuel Kirk, has this to say: "To the pagan mind, the world is ruled by caprice, by magic, by chance. ... To the modern mind, the world is ruled in accordance with law." Then he asks, "Can God answer prayer in a universe that is governed in accordance with law?" (© 1962, by Albert Emmanuel Kirk, Exposition Press Incorporated, New York, N. Y.) Does the Bible have anything to say about this?

SPEAKER: Yes, the Bible gives evidence of the effectiveness of prayer. And when we read of such instances, we might ask ourselves, What happened? Was the evidence of the answer to prayer a bringing to light of the operation of spiritual law, or was this simply some form of miraculous intervention?

Christian Science takes the view that the effectiveness of prayer is in accordance with spiritual law, which operates universally.
