Recuperative Power

Regardless of general opinions on the subject, recuperation from the experience of sickness is wholly mental and can take place quickly. That is, if one has some understanding of Christian Science. The power of recovery, according to this Science, inheres in the patient's ability to demonstrate the divine energies which are embodied in his real selfhood—God's image. One under Christian Science treatment recuperates through spiritual activity rather than through physical rest.

The Christian Science practitioner accentuates harmony as the natural state of man and encourages his patient to reflect such energizing qualities as joy and love and expectation of good in order to aid his recuperation. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 394), "By conceding power to discord, a large majority of doctors depress mental energy, which is the only real recuperative power." Then she adds, "Knowledge that we can accomplish the good we hope for, stimulates the system to act in the direction which Mind points out."

If mental dullness accompanies or follows a struggle for health, this state of mind can be dispelled by the understanding that man has no mind other than God, divine Mind, and that the energies of Mind are manifested through one's real and only selfhood. Divine Mind has no difficulty in manifesting its energies. Only the human being has this difficulty, which occurs when he has not taken a strong enough stand in declaring and knowing what he is and what comprises his individuality. Physical vigor comes naturally when thought lends itself to the energies of Mind and utilizes them.
