Many years ago I asked my mother if I might read from her copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy because I had seen the wonderful effects a study of the book had produced upon her life. Since that momentous event. Christian Science has become the Comforter guiding me "into all truth" (John 16: 13).
As I continued to study and grasp this Science, much good and joy came into my life. One of the first healings I recall was that of a back injury which happened during a basketball game in school. I remember struggling to bed in much agony and pain and then awakening the next morning without any traces of injury or any aftereffects. My mother and a practitioner whom she had called were supporting me with Christianly scientific prayer throughout the night.
Several months later I entered a university where a compulsory medical examination was a part of the entrance requirements. The physician asked me if I had ever had any injuries. When I answered that I had not, he remarked that I must have injured my back, because he could see where a bone had been set. Then I recalled the basketball experience, and I was convinced by this proof that I had found a religion that heals.
My continued study of Christian Science gave me the ability to appreciate and value the human footsteps which are necessary to obtain a good education. Up to this time, I was reluctant to study and was lax in my approach to learning. However, as I progressed in learning the true nature of God, my schoolwork improved decidedly. In one university course this was especially evident. The course required the taking of two examinations during the term. The first resulted in failure; my grade was the lowest in a large class. The instructor told me that in order to pass the course, I would have to make a very high grade in the second examination, and he had his doubts I could do this.
I felt the need of recognizing that all intelligence is from God and that this intelligence is man's by reflection. Great inspiration resulted. I approached the whole problem by completely relying on the truths I knew of God and His intelligent man. With the help of a practitioner I was able to realize that there is no limiting sense of fear or apprehension.
To this day, years later, I can recall that walk to the examination. Eager to get to the classroom, I rejoiced in knowing that "the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Prov. 2:6). While I was writing the examination, I felt something interesting happening. For the first time in my life I was able to write with ease because I was expressing an unselfed sense of Love. There was no concern about the grade or the honor and importance of having a top rating or the glory this would bring; there was just gratitude in knowing how to reflect God.
Later, after the examinations had been read, the instructor called me to his desk to ask me how it was possible to go from the lowest grade in the class to the highest. I told him that it had been a wonderful experience studying for this examination. Silently I thanked the one all-knowing Mind. The instructor used my answers as an example to the rest of the class of what a perfect paper should be.
Upon graduating from the university, I entered military service. Although other men in my company were bothered by Army discipline and routine, I was uplifted each day through reading the Bible Lesson, set out in the Quarterly, and drawing closer to God. Consequently my every need was met.
At one period our camp was hit by an epidemic of influenza. The authorities required all of us to be inoculated. My company of one hundred and fifty men was marched to the dispensary. However, because I trusted my well-being completely to God, I felt it right to seek exemption from this medical treatment. The medical attendant in charge did not know anything of Christian Science. His cross-questioning me before the company created quite a bit of embarrassment to me and confusion to the others. It was finally decided that I must take the inoculation with the rest.
Immediately after taking it, I started to manifest the symptoms of the disease that the serum was supposed to prevent. Before long I realized I was entertaining considerable resentment toward the authorities. All night I was seriously ill, but I clung to this statement in the textbook (p. 66): "Trials are proofs of God's care."
The next day I was able to make my way, although with some effort, to a chapel where a group of Christian Scientists maintained a room for quiet study and prayerful work. I was so uplifted through reading the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy that soon the discordant symptoms were dispelled.
In the morning a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services helped me in affirming this truth from Science and Health (p. 385): "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself.'" Consequently, I was able to fulfill my duties as Second Reader for our Sunday service two days after the inoculation.
The many healings which I have experienced in Christian Science have meant much, but especially meaningful has been the illumination of the Scriptures through the study of the textbook. I have taken the progressive step of receiving class instruction and am an indebted follower of Christian Science, endeavoring, with Paul, to "press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3: 14).—Stuart Weiner, Chicago, Illinois.
