When Christian Science came...

When Christian Science came into my life I was experiencing a phase of spiritual barrenness. At that time I was a member of an orthodox church, but my prayers and my study of the Bible did not seem to bring the enlightenment for which I was searching.

More out of curiosity than anything else, I decided to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which had been loaned to me. At the time I had no intention of changing my religion. In fact, I was quite adamant on that point. I read the textbook through, and more than once I reread the chapter on Prayer. It soon became clear to me that the truths contained in Science and Health were just what I had been seeking; I was convinced that this is indeed a religion based upon divine Truth.

Prior to this time, in fact for as long as I can remember, I had been a slave to patent medicines, relying on them to cure all minor ailments, and more recently I had been taking sleeping drugs and tranquilizers to help overcome the strain of overwork. I cannot remember the precise point in my study of Science when I began to lose faith in material medicine, but I did so within a few months of my starting to read the textbook.
