THEY KNEW NOT

They loved
the pride of place,
the pomp and ceremony,
and the clink of pennies
squeezed from the widows' meager store.

They feared
a loss of power;
exposure of their greed
and arrogant futilities
to that pure light of Truth he bore.

They nailed
his mortal body
to a barren tree;
seeking, in human
blood, to bind eternal might.

They thought
to still the Christ,
whose presence sings
through the countless ages
to the farthest stars above.

They slew
naught but the flesh!
And, doing so, raised
high his word for all:
"As I, so too must you, know Love."
