WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST
[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on June 2, 1963.]
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell (Isa. 14:15)
The Hebrew word rendered "hell" is she'ol. which did not necessarily imply to the Jews a state or place of torment, for they generally employed the word in a more neutral sense to describe the shadowy abode of the departed, "the underworld." Some scholars contend that she'ol derives from the verb sha'al (to enquire) and if so would mean literally "place of enquiry (referring to necromancy)."
Disannul (Isa. 14:27")
