In Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, we find "the scientific statement of being," which reads (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

This is among the first passages from the Christian Science textbook to become familiar to the Christian Science Sunday School pupil, since he hears it read from the desk each Sunday before the classes are dismissed.

It is possible that even when a pupil has had no religious training other than the teachings of Christian Science, he may not have realized the full import of the words of this spiritual declaration or grasped the power that lies behind them. Although he may have repeated the passage many times, not until he has really proved for himself in some degree the truth of what he is saying will he be able to appreciate the value of what Mrs. Eddy has unfolded to us in this fundamental statement of God and man's relationship to Him.
