When I first began really studying...
When I first began really studying Christian Science, about twenty years ago, I suddenly manifested a heavy cold. At the time, I was staying for a few days with my mother-in-law. Although some relatives were present that evening visiting with her, I got the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, sat at one side, and began reading. My mother-in-law was aware of my symptoms, and several times she offered me different material aids. I thanked her kindly, but declined them and kept reading.
Before the guests departed I was free from the cold. My mother-in-law realized that reading the book had cured me, although she did not understand it. Several times afterward she mentioned the healing.
For a number of years I had some type of heart trouble which recurred periodically. About five years ago the recurrences became more frequent. By this time I was a member of The Mother Church and a branch church, and I had help from a Christian Science practitioner. One of the passages she asked me to study was the definition of "heart" on page 587 of the textbook, which is, "Mortal feelings, motives, affections, joys, and sorrows." I also prayed to know that heart and blood do not sustain the life of man, because God is man's Life.
