Over forty years ago, when to...
Over forty years ago, when to mortal sense I was in distress, I turned to Christian Science. My great longing was to understand God and to find peace.
In the first Christian Science church which I attended these words were on the wall at the side of the rostrum (Job 22:21): "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." I knew I had my answer. Through my study of the Bible and the writings of our dear Leader I have learned to say with the Psalmist (Ps. 139:17): "How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand."
I have had many healings through the application of Christian Science, all of undiagnosed difficulties. Many were instantaneous, some slow; but for the increased spiritual understanding resulting from each one, I am grateful.
I should like to tell of two of these healings. At one time there was evidence of an internal injury, which was very painful. I prayed, acknowledging God's healing power. These words came to me: "Truth heals what the eye hath not seen." I was healed in a few days.
IFor several months large, unsightly welts came out on my body. One morning when I awakened I realized one had come out under one eye. As I looked into the mirror I recalled this sentence from the Bible (Ps. 56:4): "I will not fear what flesh can do unto me." The welt disappeared very quickly, although the others had taken several days to disappear, and no more of them developed.
I should also like to tell of a healing my daughter had when she was a freshman in high school. She was lying on her sled, coasting down an icy hill, when her sled got in a rut. It had no steering device. At the bottom of the hill were fence posts between which barbed wire had formerly been strung. She struck a post with great force, sustaining a deep cut on her forehead, a spinal injury, and internal hemorrhages.
My daughter said all she could do at the time was to declare over and over, "God is my Life."
A practitioner was called and asked to help us. She gave us this quotation from Isaiah (45:2): "I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight." We held to this promise day and night, and after continued prayerful work the hemorrhages stopped. We felt sure of the complete fulfillment of God's promise.
My daughter's progress was slow at first. She needed a great deal of help. We had to turn her in bed and help her to feed herself. About a week later she was sitting up looking at a newspaper. Part of it slipped from her lap. She reached over to pick it up, her spine straightened, and she was healed. She was soon back in high school, walking many blocks to get there.
I am grateful for Mrs. Eddy. In her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 she writes (p. 1), "And rest assured you can never lack God's outstretched arm so long as you are in His service." I have proved the truth of these words for many years.—(Mrs.) Edith S. Coxe, Azusa, California.
