Making Bible Teaching Practical

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "No and Yes" (p. 11), "If the Bible and Science and Health had the place in schools of learning that physiology occupies, they would revolutionize and reform the world, through the power of Christ."

A Sunday School teacher in a branch church asks, "How can we get our busy high school student out of bed on Sunday morning and motivated to be an alert Sunday School pupil expressing eagerness for the truths of the Bible and a desire to have a part in this world reformation?" She then writes the following as her experience in solving the problem:

"It is a truism that before a person buys anything, he has to be shown how he will benefit from the purchase. The pupil has to be shown the benefits that will come to him through active study of the Bible and our textbook, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mrs. Eddy. He has to be shown the connection between the Bible and contemporary modern living: how, through this understanding of Christian Science, the Goliaths of chemistry and algebra (or any subject that appears large and difficult) can be dominated; how the Red Seas of restrictive social cliques can be parted; how to turn his back on the Gomorrahs, the temptations of alcoholic drinking and of smoking; how to demonstrate freedom as did the three Hebrews in the midst of the fiery furnace and emerge from a difficult experience without even the smell of fire. He can be shown how these three young men became leaders in government because of their stanch stand for Principle.
