Hell ... Corruption (Ps. 16:10)

The Hebrew word she'ol (hell) is generally employed with reference to the shadowy abode of the departed, without any of the unpleasant accompaniments associated with the word "hell" in popular usage. The word shachath (corruption) means literally "a pit," presumably in this context the pit of Sheol, which was supposed to be a great subterranean cavern. Thus, in Hebrew, she'ol and shachath are virtually synonymous. Moffatt suggests, "Death ... the grave."

Feigned Lips (Ps. 17:1)
