RADIO PROGRAM No. 82 - What Is Your God?

[This is the second of a special group of programs on the subject, "God in the Twentieth Century."]

INTERVIEWER: There's no doubt about it, many who believe in God aren't sure that they know what God is and some aren't even sure that they do believe in God. Yet many would agree that there must be some origin or fundamental cause of existence. One interesting point of view was recently expressed by a leading Protestant theologian, Paul Tillich, in his book, "The Shaking of the Foundations." Dr. Tillich writes: "The name of this infinite and inexhaustible depth and ground of all being is God. ... And if that word has not much meaning for you, translate it, and speak of the depths of your life, of the source of your being, of your ultimate concern, of what you take seriously without any reservation. Perhaps, in order to do so, you must forget everything traditional that you have learned about God, perhaps even that word itself. For if you know that God means depth, you know much about Him." (Reprinted with the permission of Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. Copyright, 1948, from The Shaking of the Foundations by Paul Tillich.)

We'd be interested in your comments as a Christian Scientist about this description of God.

SPEAKER: Dr. Tillich's statement is thought-provoking. It raises questions of what we really take most seriously, what means the most to us, deep down inside. What we worship shapes our nature. It determines what we really are. Isn't it true that we all worship something? Now, what is it? Is it God or is it some material thing, such as money, health, status, power?
